We will hear from Clark Harder who is the Executive Director of the Michigan Public Transit Association to learn how transit in our state is coping with the challenges of the pandermic and what the plans are for moving forward.

Also on the program is Megan Owens who has led Transpotation Riders United (TRU) for more than a decade in working at the grassroots level to improve transit service in the Detroit metropolitan area. Despite the set-backs in getting the Regional Transportation Authority fully off the ground, Detroit has made significant progress over the last few years in improving bus services and introducing new mobility options for people.

We will also have updates on Amtrak services in Michigan and elsewhere.as well as the restart of intercity bus services.

This will be a good opportunity for those of you who have not participated in a Zoom meeting to get familiar with the platform in advance of MARP’s 47th Annual Meeting which will take place on October 17. That will be a meeting you don’t want to miss. We are fortunate to have as our keynote speaker for that meeting, Mr. Gene Skoropowski widely recognized for making the Capitol Corridor service from San Jose to Sacramento a model of success and then leading the development of the Brightline service in Florida.

One last thing before we go: please CLICK HERE to go to Rail Passengers Association Action Page and add your voice to the chorus calling on Congress to save daily service on Amtrak’s long-distance routes. Weakening the National Netowrk will inevitably affect our Michigan trains and the Midwest regional system.

Register now for the Michigan Rail Conference | VIRTUAL Midwest Rail Conference 2020

Make your plans now to attend this “virtual” conference. The scope of the annual Michigan Rail Conference has broadened this year to include our neighboring states in a program touching on  a wide variety of topics in both freight and passenger rail. Each of the half-day sessions will conclude with a keynote speaker. Joe McHugh, Amtrak Vice-President for State-Supported Services Business Development, will speak on Tuesday. Mike McClellan, Vice-President Strategic Planning at Norfolk Southern will conclude the conference on Wednesday.

Rail Passengers Association CEO and President, Jim Mathews, will be part of the opening day plenary session discussing challenges facing the rail industry in the time of COVID-19. On a panel addressing improvements in the passenger experience, MARP member Joshua Hamilton will talk about the volunteer station host program he helped establish at the East Lansing station.

Opportunities for growth in passenger rail will be addressed by Arun Rao, WisDOT, and Scott Rogers, Chair of the West Central Wisconsin Rail Coalition, a group working to restore passenger train service between Eau Claire WS and St. Paul. Michael Noland, President of the South Shore Line/NICTD, will speak about the Westlake Project which will extend service to four  communities south of Hammond IN.

VIDEO: Presentations by MDOT & Amtrak from MARP “virtual” meeting on July 9, 2020

MARP’s first ever “virtual” meeting on 09 July 2020 featured speakers from MDOT and Amtrak. Al Johnson, Acting Director of the MDOT Office of Rail, gave an update on the work in progress and planned on the Wolverine line to allow 110-mph speeds and, eventually to add up to 7 daily round trips. Derrick James, Amtrak Government Affairs, spoke about Amtrak’s plans for future growth, its digitization initiatives, and how advocates can make a difference.
