Share your transporation story to win money

Lights, Camera, Transportation!

What would you like to tell the world about train travel in Michigan? – the good, the bad, the ugly. Can you ride your bike to station? Does the train go where you want to go? What do you want decision-makers to know?

Trans4M, the statewide transportation coalition of which MARP is a founding member, is collecting videos (at least 25 seconds in length) to tell Michigan’s transportation story. We’ll use the videos to help state legislators make wise decisions about Michigan’s transportation future.

Capture your transportation story on any video device. We’ll post it on Trans4M’s Lights, Camera, Transportation YouTube channel. You will be entered in a raffle to win one of twenty $50 gift cards. In addition, the organization with the most videos will receive $1,000 towards its transportation initiative of choice.

williamstondepotAs we have done the past two years, MARP is celebrating the New Year with a January 12 visit to the Williamston Historical Depot-Museum. The town of Williamston, located on the Red Cedar River, owes its early prosperity to the coming of the railroad in 1872, connecting Detroit to the state capitol and aiding the development of agricultural enterprises. Our guest speaker is Z. Kris Wisniewski, Executive Director, Eastern Border Transportation Coalition. The EBTC is non-profit membership organization dedicated to improving the movement of people and goods between the United States and Canada. EBTC members are the transportation agencies of the U.S. States of Michigan, New York, Vermont and Maine and the Canadian Provinces of Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador. Among the EBTC’s priorities is improving and expanding cross-border rail passenger service.

In addition, we hope to have an update on plans and progress on the new East Lansing Amtrak station.

Following the meeting, we will enjoy our usual no-host lunch at the Tavern 109, 115 East Grand River in Williamston.

Amtrak adding trains in Michigan for Christmas holiday travel

Due to strong demand, Amtrak is adding additional Wolverine Service trains between Michigan and Chicago to provide expanded December weekend travel options. Passengers should book their tickets now for best availability and pricing.

Amtrak will offer an additional eastbound and an additional westbound Wolverine Service train between Chicago and Ann Arbor on December 21, 22 & 23 and on December 28, 29 & 30. Ordinarily, Amtrak provides three daily round-trips through Ann Arbor, with continuing service to and from Detroit-area stations.

The regular Wolverines (Trains 350-355) and the extra Wolverines (Trains 356 & 359) will operate at top speeds of 110 mph through parts of Indiana and Western Michigan. Please see the schedules below, which include the Blue Water (Trains 364 & 365), that share the Wolverine route between Battle Creek and Chicago.

During Thanksgiving 2012, a record setting 737,537 passengers chose trains in the 46 states served by Amtrak, up 1.9 percent over the previous year and the prior record set in 2011. Thanksgiving ridership on the Amtrak Wolverines was 15,361, up nearly 17 percent from the year before in large part due to extra holiday trains operated between Kalamazoo/Ann Arbor and Chicago.

The extra trains were added with the encouragement of the Michigan Department of Transportation and permission of Norfolk Southern and CN railroads.

In this lecture and slideshow, Detroit News reporter Michael H. Hodges discusses the functional and stylistic evolution of the train station over the 19th and early 20th centuries, and the range of styles architects employed to both tame and exalt rail transportation.

Hodges’ new coffee-table book, Michigan’s Historic Railroad Stations photographs and profiles 31 depots (including Ann Arbor) across the state.

Michael will also sign copies of the book (which will be for sale) following the event.
