MARP Volunteers Needed for Train Shows in Sept. & Oct.

One of the important things that MARP does throughout the year is to exhibit at many of the train shows held around the state. We distribute information and talk with people. It is informal and fun! Not only do we create awareness of MARP as an organization, but we help to get passenger train information and issues before the public. To do this, we count on MARP members to volunteer to help staff the table.

We have 5 big train shows coming up in the next month for which volunteers are needed. Please reply marprail@yahoo.com if you can help with any of the shows listed below. Or perhaps you would like to help out at other shows throughout the year — we’d like to know that as well. Just let us hear from you (marprail@yahoo.com). That way we can contact you when there is a show in your area.

Here’s another opportunity. The Amtrak 40th Anniversary Exhibit Train will be at the Jackson station on October 8 and 9. If you would like to help out, just follow the instructions below.

AMTRAK ANNOUNCES MORE EXHIBIT TRAIN STOPS
Free traveling exhibit showcases Amtrak 40th anniversary

WASHINGTON – In celebration of Amtrak’s 40th anniversary, America’s Railroad(sm) is offering the public an opportunity to view an Exhibit Train, a unique traveling display showcasing the railroad’s history.

The free exhibit showcases Amtrak history over the decades, displaying memorabilia like vintage advertising, past menus and dinnerware, and period uniforms. Most locations also will feature train-themed kids’ activities at Chuggington Kids Depot.

Note: Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., except Strasburg Rail Road events which opens at 9 a.m., and Steamtown National Historic Site which is open from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

In addition, commemorative 40th anniversary merchandise will be available for purchase onboard the train including: Amtrak: An American Story, a144-page commemorative book that chronicles the history of the railroad with archival photographs, a historical timeline and personal narratives for each decade; Amtrak: The First 40 Years, a documentary DVD produced for public television that provides an exclusive look inside America’s Railroadsm with hard-to-find photographs and video footage as well as interviews with past and present leaders; and a commemorative cachet (envelope) that bears a special pictorial postmark authorized by the United States Postal Service.

Travelers advisory: Track work will affect Amtrak Wolverine trains 350 and 353

Poor track conditions along the Amtrak Wolverine route in Michigan has caused service delays since June 2011 due to speed restrictions imposed by the host freight railroad, Norfolk Southern Railway. Michigan Department of Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle announced Aug. 8, 2011, that a $4.2 million maintenance agreement with Norfolk Southern would begin soon and improvements completed by mid-September.

Track work being performed by Norfolk Southern Railway will affect Trains 350 and 353, on the dates shown below:

Aug. 17 and 18, 2011
Aug. 22 through Aug. 25, 2011
Aug. 29 through Sept. 1, 2011
Sept. 5 through Sept. 8, 2011

Eastbound Train 350, originating in Chicago, will terminate at Jackson. Passengers will be provided motorcoach service to Pontiac and all intermediate stations.

Westbound Train 353, which normally originates at Pontiac, will originate at Jackson. Passengers will be provided motorcoach service between Pontiac, Jackson and all intermediate stations.

The work to be done by Norfolk Southern includes replacing ties, smoothing the track, and improving grade crossings on a 135-mile section between Ypsilanti and Kalamazoo. Train speeds of 60 mph will be restored on this segment, in preparation for even higher speeds in years to follow.

Battle Creek Station temporary relocation begins Aug. 3, 2011

Beginning Wednesday, August 3,2011 and continuing for approximately nine months, the Battle Creek station will undergo renovations. All station operations will relocate to a temporary facility located about 300 feet west of the current station across McCamly St.

Arrive Early and Check In
Passengers should arrive early due to limited parking, possible congestion and for station assistance.

Upon arrival, passengers should check in with an agent at the ticket window.

Limited short-term parking is available at the temporary station for passenger drop off and pick up only

Free long-term parking is available at the Hamblin parking structure located about 200 feet northeast of the permanent station next to the Kellogg Arena. Passengers parking at the Hamblin parking structure must obtain a parking permit from a station agent to place in their car window. Vehicles that do not display a parking permit are subject to charge and/or tow.

The safety of our employees and passengers is our top priority. For your safety, avoid the construction area whenever possible, and be mindful of the following:

  • Be careful if you need to walk near the construction area.
  • Stay at a safe distance from machinery and moving construction equipment.
  • Watch out for any tripping hazards, such as construction debris or uneven surfaces.
