Passenger rail future is topic of Muskegon public meeting

The public is invited to a forum Wednesday evening on the future of Michigan’s passenger rail transportation.

The open meeting is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. at the Shoreline Inn and Conference Center, 750 Terrace Point Blvd.

Residents are encouraged to speak out on how best to improve passenger and freight rail service. The forum is sponsored by the Michigan Environmental Council, the Michigan Association of Railroad Passengers, the Michigan Municipal League and the hotel as well as other economic development and civic groups, governments and unions.

Elected officials expected to participate include state Sen. Gerald VanWoerkom, R-Norton Shores; his elected successor, Rep. Goeff Hansen, R-Hart; Muskegon County Board of Commissioners Chairman Kevin Mahoney, Muskegon City Commissioner Clara Shepard and Montague Mayor Henry Roesler Jr.

The session is part of a series of 16 throughout the state. Citizen ideas will be forwarded to state and federal policymakers.

Passenger rail advocates, including some environmentalists, call it a tool to revitalize cities, reduce freeway and airport congestion, create “green” construction and manufacturing jobs and cut air pollution.

Each forum includes an overview of the existing rail system, an interactive rail mapping session, discussion of financing options, and a vision for a Michigan high-speed rail system.

Previous forums have been in Grand Rapids, Holland, Kalamazoo, Jackson, Flint, Detroit and other cities. The final forum is Thursday in Ann Arbor. See http://www.michiganbyrail.org for more details.

At this year’s meeting, we will pay tribute to John DeLora, who founded MARP in 1973 and has worked tirelessly in the years since to advance the cause of passenger train service in Michigan. Michigan By Rail Forum visits Detroit Oct. 28

WHAT: The Michigan by Rail Forum in Detroit is part of a series of 16 public forums taking place throughout the state to engage citizens on a vision for the future of Michigan’s freight and passenger rail system.

WHEN:  Thursday, October 28, 6 – 8 pm

WHERE: MSU Detroit Center, 3408 Woodward Avenue, Detroit

The event will include an overview of the existing system, an interactive rail mapping session, discussion of financing issues, and a big-picture vision of the future of Michigan’s railroad system.

Your input is important to shaping the Michigan State Rail Plan currently being developed.

John Langdon will lead off  with an update on the planning and funding for the proposed relocation of the Grand Rapids Amtrak Station to a new facility alongside the regional transit hub near downtown. The facility will be ADA-compliant and will allow connections with local transportation services.

 MARP has recognized the late Ray Hamacher with a plaque that has been placed in the current Amtrak station. Ray was instrumental in the efforts to revive the Pere Marquette route and served as a station volunteer for many years. We hope that family and associates of Ray will be with us at this meeting.

 On the heels of the NARP Council of Representative meeting held in Grand Rapids this week, we can anticipate reports from John DeLora, Michigan’s delegate to the Council, as well as from Robert Tischbein and John Langdon, who took part in a pre-meeting discussion of the relationship between the national organization and the state “ARPS”

NOTE:
The Executive Committee will hold a brainstorming session following the member meeting. This session will meet at the Grand Rapids Rapid Transit Headquarters, 250 Grandville SW., Grand Rapids, from 1 pm –  4 pm.  The session is intended to give direction for 2011. No “official” business will be transacted. Please let Chair Robert Tischbein know if you are unable to attend.
